Description:

The Attica, Athens AR Tetradrachm (c. 431–393 B.C.) is among the most recognisable and influential silver coins of the ancient world, struck at the height of Athens’ political, military, and cultural power.
Minted in the city of Athens, the civic centre of the region of Attica, this tetradrachm reflects the authority of the Athenian state and its dominance over Mediterranean trade during and after the Peloponnesian War.

The obverse bears the helmeted head of Athena, patron goddess of the city, rendered in a bold, archaic style that deliberately preserved tradition and recognisability. On the reverse appears the iconic owl, Athena’s sacred companion and a symbol of wisdom and vigilance, accompanied by an olive sprig and crescent moon, with the inscription ΑΘΕ signifying “of the Athenians.”

Struck in high-purity silver from the Laurion mines, these coins were trusted far beyond Greece, circulating as an international currency of commerce, tribute, and power, and remain enduring symbols of classical Athens’ wealth and influence.
