Description:
The first primary jade deposit in Siberia was reportedly discovered in 1986.
The mining of Siberian green nephrite is extremely challenging due to harsh weather conditions and rugged terrain. Mining sites are most accessible by helicopter in the summer or via heavy-duty trucks along frozen rivers in winter. From the nearest city, it takes at least four to five days to reach the sites, with retired six-wheel army trucks being the most reliable transport.
To extract the jade, miners inject expansion agents into fractures in the giant rocks, limiting the use of explosives to protect the nephrite from damage. After injection, they wait a year, allowing natural temperature changes to fracture the rocks and prepare them for the mining season.
The resulting Siberian jade beads are crafted into bracelets and necklaces, with typical sizes including 6 inches (16 cm) for bracelets, making them perfect for daily wear or layering with other pieces.
