The mining of Siberian green nephrite is extremely challenging due to harsh weather conditions and rugged terrain. From the nearest city, it takes at least four to five days to reach the sites, with retired six-wheel army trucks being the most reliable transport.
To extract the jade, miners inject expansion agents into fractures in the giant rocks, limiting the use of explosives to protect the nephrite from damage. After injection, they wait a year, allowing natural temperature changes to fracture the rocks and prepare them for the mining season.
